Gone With The Wind 1860s Ball

Saturday 17 May 2008

7.30pm - 11.30pm

Gone with the Wind Ball

Join us as we travel back in time to re-enact a mid-19th century formal ball. Dance the night away with live music by vintage dance band, Earthly Delights, as they play exquisite waltzes and quadrilles, lively polkas and schottisches, mazurka waltzes, and breathless reels and contradances popular in both the North and the South during the American Civil War.

It's fun! It's easy! All dances will be taught, so no prior dance experience is necessary. If you are still a little nervous about dancing, then attend the weekly dance lessons during April or May. Click here for more information.

Suggested costume is evening dress or appropriate dress uniform of the early 1860's, or modern evening dress. As usual, however, costumes are admired, not required.

Punch will be served throughout the evening. Supper will be served at 10pm.

(Your potluck contributions to the buffet during these difficult times are greatly appreciated!).

VOLUNTEER: Those who help with our balls have a wonderful time. It is an excellent way to meet other people in a fun, spirited, and enriching way. There are many ways to assist in making this another magical evening. We are always needing help setting up the hall, cleaning at the end, washing mugs, preparing supper, putting up decorations for special themes, sewing costumes for special displays and putting up posters around town.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS

1. Do I have to dance?
It's OK simply to enjoy listening to the music and watching the dancers, however the priority of the evening is to dance, so we keep the chairs in the hall to the sides to allow for safe dancing space. We have a few tables available on one side where you may sit and relax. Whether you come to watch or dance, we still require you to purchase a ticket.

2. I don't have formal clothes. OR I don't wear dresses.
Please don't let that be a reason not to attend. People have dressed formally, in traditional dress, and less formally. Just dress up as much as you are able. If you truly have no "nice" slacks, shirt or tie, please mention it to us; we'll do our best to see that you have something to wear.

4. May I bring my camera or video camera?
No video cameras but you can bring your pocket camera. All we ask is that copies of photos are emailed to us for our records.

5. How can I help?
Thank you so much for asking! There are many opportunities to help before, during, and after the Ball. Please look at the volunteer sign-up sheet at the ticket table or at the dance lessons or call us. Financial help is also greatly appreciated, as the general admission tickets cover only a portion of our expenses.

6. Is this an event I can bring my mother/grandfather/boss/child to?
This event is appropriate for school-age children and older. The site has easy access for the disabled. Supervised children are welcome as long as they have a ticket. These events have a lovely family-friendly feel. We have tables down the side of the hall that non-dancers can sit at and listen to the wonderful music.

7. Do you have baby-sitting services?
We do not provide baby-sitting services. Please though, if your children are not dancing, bring something for them to read or colour in, even board games are useful. It is unsafe to let them run around the dance-floor. As the supper is mid-evening, bring something for them to snack on during the night. As I'm an organiser, and a mother of 4 children, one of whom is a special-needs child, I have arranged for my son's carer to come along and look after him at the balls - that way he can have fun and I don't get frazzled. My other children love to dance now and our eldest daughter Amy now plays in the band. Early in the evening you may wish to take your child on a walk near the old church and cemetary.

Interstate friends

You are always especially welcome at Earthly Delights' dance evenings and balls. If you need a place to stay in Canberra just let us know and we can arrange a free billet for you. For a start there's often room at our place. Please let us know early - and if there are a few people coming from interstate, we may even add a social get-together come dance-preview for you on the afternoon before the dance- to make for an even more rewarding weekend.
