Public Dances & Balls

Public Displays & Tours

Posters

On the pages under this chapter heading we try to keep track of all the up-coming public shows (as opposed to private engagements) we are involved in - from dance classes to balls, from fetes to concerts. Every show will have a very different program as we don't like to repeat ourselves too much in the course of a year (even across years). Some will have special themes (to do with an historic style or the time of year) but most can't easily be put into any box and might include a combination of musical and dance material from across the last 500 years. When we tried to capture in a couple of words the range of what we might do, particularly at a dance or dance workshop, we failed miserably and ended up with a two stanza poem listing everything:

From village and country to vintage ballroom,

Renaissance court to regency swoon,

From circle and sets to couples and contras,

Galliards and pavans to galops and polkas.

From branles and bourrees to reels and fandangos,

Minuets and mazurkas to two steps and tangos,

From redowas and waltzes to maggots and marches

Quadrilles and schottisches to dance games with arches!

But don't be put off by the fact that what we do doesn't have a ready label. Come along, have a great time, try something different, make new friends, expand your horizons and fill your senses! Everyone is welcome - and you don't need any special dress or experience. Consider also telling friends about our shows. We love to have the company of newcomers - the more the merrier!  We can't afford a lot of press advertising, and word of mouth generates the very best events. Indeed, if you can help distribute event fliers to friends or at your workplace, school or club please do let us know - or simply print off for pinning up and passing around the current dance posters.

If you would like to know more about the musicians who play for most of our public events or about John Garden who leads most of the dancing, go to the Members page of the Band chapter.

If you would like more details on any particular upcoming event, please phone us on (02) 62811098 or email us. We now have a FAQ section to answer some of your questions.

If you would like to view photos taken at past dances and workshops or book the band for your own event other pages on this site can help you.

Comments from our email readers:

Thank you for keeping alive the inspiration of historical dance through your newsletter. Every time I receive one, I am taken from the world of American politics, bills and other mundane activities into one of dance, music, kindred spirits, and excitement.
I only wish you were in America - how I'd love to be able to have access to the events you are planning!

Thank you for "making my day"!

Marie
