19th
CENTURY
DANCE WEEK
Monday 18 to Thursday 21 APRIL 2011, Canberra, Australia
Conveniently filling the 4 days between the
2011 Jane Austen Festival and Easter (with its National Folk
Festival) will be a once-off opportunity for keen dancers to
learn and enjoy 80 wonderful set and couples dances from the
1820s to 1880s and start to understand how dance evolved in
that most romantic era.
Classes will run 9am to 5pm each day, and will
be to live music (most notably, the outstanding 19th century
salon-style piano playing of Sally Taylor).
Teaching will be by the passionate and knowledgeable
Dr John Gardiner-Garden, who also plans to have available for
perusal hundreds of original period dance books and prints,
and have available for purchase 4 thick volumes of illustrated
notes covering all the dances and techniques we'll be exploring.
The week (for a minimum of 16, maximum of 32,
participants) will be held in an inner-Canberra venue (either
our studio, St. John's Church Hall, or a combination, depending
on numbers).
The fee will cover morning/afternoon tea and
lunch
(we are trying to make it easy for interstaters),
but by having it not include anything people choose to do after
5pm and
leaving participants to organise their own socialising in the evening,
we can keep the 4 days fee down to $120 for the first 12 enrolees, $160
thereafter.
(Please make sure to bring smooth preferably leather-soled dance shoes, as rubber soles do not work for this style of dancing.)
