What should women wear to the Jane Austen Festival?
Women are asked to dress in Regency era dress for the Jane Austen Festival Ball. It is optional what they wear during the day, but many are now wearing day dresses during the day. Don't panic, because many others choose to wear comfortable dresses, skirts & blouses - so wear what is comfortable for you. We do ask that you do not wear loose clothing in the dance workshops.
What should I wear in the evening or to a ball?
Undergarments
Stockings, pantalettes, shift, short stays or corset, bodiced petticoat
Outer garments
Evening gown - silk or muslin gown with short sleeves; long gloves; hair up with tiara/feathers/beads/turban; shawl or cloak for entering and exiting. Lighter colours were worn in the evening candlelight.
Day gown - cotton dress with long sleeves with a chemisette to prevent sun exposure; day cap and bonnet; spencer or shawl.

In 2012 we are holding archery workshops, and the picture below shows what was worn outside in 1822 during an archery competition.

What shoes should we wear?
We ask that you wear smooth-soled shoes for dance workshops and the ball. Many wear soft split-sole jazz shoes or ballet slippers with leather soles. Please do not wear heavy boots or rubber-soled shoes into the dance hall as they will either damage the floor or make dancing very difficult.
